World
Missions
From
its earliest beginnings The Peoples Church has been a missions-driven
church. The vision of founder, Oswald J. Smith, was to raise up a church
that would keep as its primary core value, the spreading of the news of
the gospel around the world.
A
number of memorable quotes from Dr. Smith reveal the passion that he carried
and promoted throughout his ministry: Why should anyone hear the gospel
twice before everyone has heard it once? You must go or send a substitute.
That vision has not changed. It is still our pre-eminent passion.
So,
through its long history The Peoples Church has given many millions of
dollars in support of thousands of missionaries spread over every continent.
Its annual missions budget has traditionally far exceeded other departments
and today comprises some 40% of the total budget. These large funds have
been raised almost exclusively from the congregants of The Peoples Church
as families and individuals have bought in to the concept
of sacrificial missions giving.
To
sustain such a high level of missions giving Dr. Oswald promoted the concept
of Faith Promise. Faith Promise giving is explained during each World
Missions Conference and the promises received at the annual
conference make up the missions budget for the next year.
Faith
Promise
Put
simply, ones Faith Promise offering is based on an amount that he/she
is trusting God to provide during the next year. This amount is over and
above what one would normally give. As the Lord provides, the promised
funds, normally donated monthly, are given entirely to the cause of World
Missions.
The
Faith Promise is not a pledge and is never followed up by The Peoples
Church. Once submitted, it is left to the individual to completely trust
God for the committed amount.
It
has been through the Faith Promise concept that the many millions
of dollars have been directed to the cause of Missions from The Peoples
Church over its seventy-five year history.
Current
Programs
Today The Peoples Church helps in the support of 68 agencies, 325 missionaries
plus 155 nationals around the world. We are grateful for the way that
God has enabled us to assist those missions partners. There is also a
strong desire to have our people take ownership of the missionary enterprise
by becoming actively involved in the work of missions both locally and
globally.
The missions program is committed to continually embrace the cause of
world evangelization:
- by direct support of national pastors and
missionaries through their agencies;
- through participation in international media programming;
- through short term missions projects;
- by preaching the message via television ;
- through local outreach ministry .
